Kirtan is an ancient practice from the Bhakti (devotional) yoga tradition of India, shared for thousands of years as a way to awaken the heart through sound. In a simple call-and-response format, a chant is offered by the Wallah (leader) and gently echoed by the group, supported by live music and rhythm. As the mind settles into repetition, something softer and more spacious can emerge.
This gathering is an offering of Songs from the Heart: A Kirtan & Medicine Song Offering, a guided devotional sound experience weaving together kirtan and medicine songs from various traditions. Rooted in Bhakti chant and expanded into broader expressions of heart-centered music, this is a space where sound becomes a pathway to presence, connection, and the magic we can create when we all sing together.
This is not a performance or concert in the traditional sense, but a shared participatory experience. All music is led by the facilitators, with space for participants to join in singing, chanting, or to simply listen, rest, and receive. The songs are accessible and do not require prior experience or familiarity. You are invited to engage in whatever way feels right for you.
A limited number of chairs and floor seats with backs are available, as well as plenty of bolsters and blankets for your comfort.
Your Kirtan Wallahs
Jordan Smith, known musically as Sister Smith, is a singer and facilitator whose work is rooted in music, yoga, and devotional practice. Raised in a musical family, she began with piano and developed a lifelong relationship with singing. Through yoga, she was introduced to kirtan, sound baths, breathwork, and chanting, which deepened her relationship to sound as a healing and devotional practice. She is devoted to exploring kirtan and medicine songs as pathways to presence, connection, and collective expression through sound.
One of her life’s intentions is to share the joy and connection that singing can bring, creating a safe and welcoming space where all are invited to participate and experience the healing power of their own unique voice.
She is honored to co-lead this offering with her brother, Cameron Smith.
Cameron Smith is a multi-instrumental musician who has been creating and performing his own music for over 30 years. Rooted in a long-standing dedication to musical expression, he brings depth, versatility, and intuitive support across instruments, rhythm, and voice. His presence helps shape a grounded and responsive musical foundation for devotional chant and heart-centered song.
Collectively, this offering is held in gratitude at The Yoga Center of Black Mountain. We are honored to share this space as a place of renewal—where tradition meets the present moment, and voices gather in connection, devotion, and shared humanity. All are welcome.
